Finding the Right Handwritten Font for a Brand Identity

I was staring at a blank artboard, with a new branding project open. The client was a small, local ceramics studio—they made beautiful, hand-crafted tableware and wanted a visual identity that felt personal, artistic, and slightly elevated. They were wary of anything too rigid or corporate. My first instinct was to explore handwritten fonts. That’s when I started testing Lock Side.

The First Impression: Modern Handwritten Charm

From the first typed word, Lock Side struck me with its distinct balance. It’s a fun and modern handwritten font, but it doesn’t feel chaotic or overly casual. The clean lines give it a contemporary feel, while the bold yet graceful strokes add a sense of confident craft. Each letter feels carefully drawn, not just digitally replicated. For the ceramics studio, this was key: it visually echoed the handmade nature of their products while offering the clarity a brand needs.

From Logo Draft to Final Mark

I placed the studio’s name in Lock Side on a simple logo draft. Immediately, the personality clicked. The font’s character provided the warmth they wanted, but its clean construction meant it remained legible even at smaller sizes. I experimented with using it as the sole logo typeface, and it worked beautifully. It held its own without needing extra graphical elements. This is a font that can truly anchor a logo design, especially for businesses where personality is a core product feature.

We moved from the logo to the broader brand identity. Lock Side became our primary display font. It featured on the homepage hero section of their website, creating an immediate, friendly welcome. On social media graphics announcing new collections, it added a cohesive and recognizable voice. For packaging design, we used it on the main label stickers for their ceramic boxes—the bold strokes stood out clearly against the textured paper, yet the graceful flow softened the overall look.

Practical Performance in Real Materials

A font must perform beyond the screen. I printed test business cards and a small poster. Lock Side retained its charm in print. The letters didn’t blob or become indistinct; the clean lines ensured good reproduction even on simpler printers. This practicality is crucial for small businesses that might start with DIY printing before scaling up. On a mockup for a potential shop sign, the font’s weight and clarity suggested it would be readable from a comfortable distance, projecting a modern but approachable storefront vibe.

Building a Cohesive System with Font Pairing

No brand uses just one font. For longer text—like the “About Us” page on their website or product descriptions—we needed a supportive typeface. Lock Side, being a distinct script font, pairs wonderfully with a simple, neutral sans serif. I chose a clean geometric sans for body text. The combination worked: Lock Side drew attention and set the mood, while the sans serif provided effortless readability for all supporting information. This pairing created a clear visual hierarchy across all assets, from editorial design in their blog to printed flyers.

I also explored the font’s included styles. Many modern handwritten fonts come with alternates and ligatures, which allow for custom tweaks to prevent repetitive lettering in logos. Lock Side’s careful crafting suggests it would include such thoughtful features, giving a designer subtle tools to make a logo feel even more unique and tailored.

The Mood It Communicates

Using Lock Side throughout the initial mockups shifted the entire project’s mood. The client’s feedback centered on the feeling the font conveyed: creative, confident, friendly, and modern. It avoided the childishness of some script fonts and the coldness of many minimalist typefaces. For brand perception, this was a win. It helped position the ceramics studio not just as a craft hobby, but as a professional, design-conscious business making beautiful objects. The consistency of using Lock Side across logo, packaging, and digital assets began building immediate recognition.

Realistic Advice for Testing a Font

Before committing any font to a full brand system, my process is simple but vital. I test it in five key scenarios:

Lock Side passed each test. Its bold stroke held up in color variations, and its graceful form didn’t clash with other elements. This testing phase saves countless hours down the line and ensures the font is a versatile asset, not a decorative limitation.

Lock Side as a Design Asset

For graphic designers and brand designers working with clients in creative industries, a font like Lock Side becomes a powerful asset. It’s not just a preset; it’s a starting point with a strong personality. I see it working exceptionally well for branding, logotypes, and packaging design for product-based businesses like the ceramics studio, but also for boutique skincare brands, local cafés, creative studios, and handmade shops. Its modern handwritten style fits the current appetite for authentic, human-centered branding.

In commercial design, considering font licensing is part of the job. A premium font with clear commercial licensing, which Lock Side appears to be, allows you to confidently use it across client deliverables—from product labels to social media templates to merchandise—without future legal concerns for your client. This makes it a reliable, professional choice.

The project for the ceramics studio is moving forward with Lock Side as a cornerstone of their identity. It demonstrated that a fun handwritten font can carry serious brand weight. It provided the artistic flair the client desired while giving me, as the designer, the professional toolkit I needed to build a cohesive, scalable, and engaging visual system. That’s the true test of any typeface: does it inspire and function simultaneously? For this project, Lock Side did.
